During and After Interview Tips

DURING THE INTERVIEW 1. Arrive Early: Arrive 10 – 15 minutes before your scheduled interview time. Take into consideration traffic you might encounter and parking. 2. Arrive Prepared: You should bring with you extra copies of your resume, a list of at least 3 professional references, and a pen and paper. Some employers may also require you to bring your academic transcripts. All of these items should be organized in a folio. 3. Make A Good First Impression: When meeting someone for the first time, people often form opinions about others during the first 30 seconds. Your appearance, behavior, and attitude are important factors that contribute to that first impression. Appearance Dress professionally. Dress in modern stylish clothes, no flashy colors or styles. Err on the side of being overdressed.  Use make-up moderately. Make sure your hair, mustache and/or beard are well trimmed. Don’t overdo use of jewelry. WHAT TO DO AFTER AN INTERVIEW

After the Interview: • Within two days of the interview, send a thank-you note/email to the person in charge of the interview process with copies to the others involved. Mention what you appreciated from the day’s activities and reiterate your interest in the position and the organization. • A week after sending the thank-you, you may contact the employer to show your continued interest and ask if there is any additional information you can provide. • If the employer does not respond within the expected time frame, you may phone or email the person who interviewed you to ask about your status.

AFTER INTERVIEW

The first thing to do after leaving the interview is breathe a sigh of relief! The second is to start a follow-up procedure. Sitting in your car, on the bus, train, or plane, do a written recap of the interview while it’s still fresh in your mind. Answer these questions: Whom did I meet? What are the first projects and/or biggest challenges? What does the job entail? What aspects of the interview went poorly? What aspects went well? How can I improve my performance? What questions would I like to have asked and didn’t? Do I want to receive an offer from this employer? What is the next step to take with this employer? Next, write a follow-up note to the interviewer to acknowledge the meeting and to keep you fresh in his or her mind. Be sure to mail this letter within 24 hours of the interview.
